How to Clean and Maintain Silvan Resilient Hardwood Floors

Keeping Silvan beautiful is simple: regular dry dusting, a damp (never wet) mop with a pH-neutral hardwood cleaner, and quick attention to spills. Here are the quick rules, then the details.

The Quick Rules
  • Daily: soft-bristle broom, microfiber dust mop, or vacuum with the beater bar off. No stiff brushes or beater bars.
  • Mopping: pH-neutral hardwood cleaner on a well-wrung mop. Spray the mop, not the floor, and wipe with the grain. No standing water, soaking, steam, or damp mopping within 48 hours of installation.
  • Cleaners: pH-neutral, no-residue formulas made for UV-cured acrylic hardwood. No vinegar, ammonia, soap, wax, polish, oil, or vinyl and laminate cleaners.
  • Rugs: wool, cotton, or natural fiber rugs with adhesive-free natural rubber pads. No rubber- or foam-backed mats, or latex- or PVC-backed rugs.
  • Furniture: felt pads (minimum 1") on all legs, wide-wheel casters or a chair mat. No narrow hard casters or non-breathing plastic film under furniture.
  • Sunlight: drapes, blinds, or UV-filtering film, and rotate rugs periodically. No prolonged direct sunlight on the same area.

After Installation

Do a thorough dry clean first, sweep, dust mop, or vacuum. Wait at least 48 hours before damp mopping to let the floor fully settle.

Daily Cleaning

Sweep or dust mop regularly in high-traffic areas, grit is the main cause of finish wear. Vacuum on a hard-surface setting with the beater bar off. Walk-off mats at every exterior entrance.

Damp Mopping

Use a pH-neutral, no-residue cleaner made for UV-cured acrylic hardwood. Spray the mop, not the floor, liquid should absorb within a minute. Wipe with the grain. No steam mops. Heat and moisture together cause swelling, seam separation, and permanent finish damage.

Spills and Stains

Blot spills immediately, standing water can work into seams if left for too long and cause swelling. Don't scrub hard and don't soak the area.

Prevention

Felt pads (1" minimum) on all furniture legs. Lift, don't drag, and use a Masonite panel for heavy appliances. Wide-wheel casters or a hard-floor chair mat under desk chairs. Trim pet nails regularly. Drapes or UV-filtering film during peak sun hours. Rotate rugs so the floor ages evenly. Maintain 50°F–85°F and 35–65% RH year-round, humidity swings stress the installation regardless of cleaning habits.

Common Questions

Can I steam clean Silvan?
Do not steam clean Silvan. Use a damp microfiber mop with a hardwood-safe cleaner.

Do I need to wax or polish Silvan?
The UV-cured acrylic finish is complete as-is. Do not apply any wax or polish as this can create buildup and can affect the floor's finish.

Can I use rubber-backed mats?
Rubber and foam can permanently discolor the finish. Use a natural fiber rug with a natural rubber pad that has no adhesives.

Will sunlight fade my floors?
All wood shifts with UV exposure over time. Window treatments during peak hours and rotating rugs keeps aging even.
