Can Modin Be Installed Over Radiant Heat?
Modin works with in-floor radiant heat, as long as the subfloor surface never exceeds 85°F. Here’s what works, what doesn’t, and how to time the install.
- In-floor radiant heat (embedded in subfloor): Compatible, surface temp must stay ≤85°F
- Gypsum-based subfloors w/ radiant heat: Compatible
- Concrete slabs w/ radiant heat: Compatible, requires 6 mil poly moisture barrier
- Loose electric heating mats (not embedded): Not compatible, can overheat and impact underlayment. Voids warranty
Temperature & Timing
- Hard temperature ceiling: ≥85°F at any point on the subfloor surface
- 24 hours before install: Drop floor temp to ≤70°F and hold
- During install: Keep floor temp at ≤70°F
- 48 hours after install: Hold at ≤70°F
- After 48 hours: Gradually increase to desired setting, never above 85°F
- New systems: Run 48+ hours before install to let the system stabilize
Use an in-floor temperature sensor to prevent overheating. If the radiant system is brand new, run it for at least 48 hours before install, new systems can spike on first use, and that should happen before the planks go down
Concrete Slabs with Radiant Heat-
Run the heating system first to drive out residual slab moisture.

Verify moisture levels: ≤5.0 lbs per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours, RH ≤85%.

Lay a 6 mil poly moisture barrier between the slab and Modin.

Drop floor temp to ≤70°F before install and hold through the 48-hour post-install window.
What to Avoid

Don’t exceed 85°F at the floor surface. Set your sensor cap accordingly.

Don’t install on day one of a new system. Run it 48+ hours first to let it stabilize.

Don’t use loose electric mats. Have them embedded in the subfloor first, surface mats can overheat and impact the underlayment

Don’t use self-leveling compound over surface-mounted radiant heat. Choose an embedded system instead.

Don’t skip the moisture barrier on concrete. 6 mil poly minimum, even with radiant heat.

Common Questions
What if my system can reach above 85°F?
That’s fine, as long as the in-floor sensor caps the surface temp at 85°F. The sensor limit is what matters, not the system’s maximum output .
Why drop the temperature before install?
Modin expands and contracts with temperature. Installing on a hot floor means the planks contract afterward and create gaps. Starting cool, then warming gradually, lets the floor settle at its operating dimensions.
Does this apply to Modin Herringbone?

Does Modin’s 0°F–140°F range mean I can run radiant heat hotter?
The range applies to the lifetime durability during storage and transit, not operating temperature. The 85°F surface ceiling still applies.
