Can Silvan Be Installed Over Radiant Heat?

Yes, Silvan works with most radiant heat systems, as long as the floor surface stays under 80°F. Here’s what works, what doesn’t, and how to set it up

What Works (and What Doesn’t)
 
  • Water-based (hydronic) systems: Compatible, pipes must be flat and well-distributed in subfloor
  • Electric systems embedded in the subfloor: Compatible
  • Loose electric heating mats(not embedded): Not recommended, can void your warranty
Temperature & Sensor Requirements

Surface temperature cannot exceed 80°F. Two sensors are required:

  • Room thermostat: Controls ambient air temperature
  • Floor sensor: Caps surface temp at 80°F, required to catch hot spots under rugs and furniture

The room thermostat alone won’t catch hot spots under rugs or furniture. Both sensors are required.

Subfloor Setup for Water-Based Systems

Cover hydronic pipes with this layered setup to prevent hot spots directly above the pipes, the most common cause of plank gapping over radiant heat: 

  1. Profiled particle floorboards with the pipes positioned inside.

  2. Heat-distributing aluminum sheets to spread heat evenly.

  3. Tongue-and-groove particleboard or plywood, at least 0.24” (6 mm) thick.

Where Radiant Heat Doesn’t Belong

Never run radiant heat under kitchen cupboards, built-ins, or other enclosed areas. Heat can’t escape, the surface temp spikes past 80°F, and the planks above will fail. Stop your heating zones at the edge of any cabinetry.

Climate Control After Installation

Radiant heat dries the air more than standard forced-air heating. To keep planks stable:

  • Maintain 65°–85°F and 40–60% RH year-round.

  • Run a humidifier in winter, radiant heat pulls RH well below 40% otherwise

What to Avoid

  • Don’t exceed 80°F at the floor surface. Set the floor sensor’s cap accordingly.

  • Don’t use loose electric mats. Have them embedded into the subfloor first.

  • Don’t skip the floor sensor. The room thermostat alone won’t protect against surface hot spots.

  • Don’t run heat under cabinets or built-ins. Stop zones at the edge of any cabinetry.

  • Don’t skip a winter humidifier. Most “floor problems” over radiant heat are humidity problems.

 

Common Questions

Does radiant heat work with both glue-down and floating Silvan installs?

Both are compatible within the specific requirements in the Silvan Installation Instructions.

Can I install Silvan over hydronic tubing in a concrete slab?

Yes, as long as the slab meets Silvan’s standard subfloor requirements (level, dry, ≤80% RH at 68°F, flat to within 1/16” over 6 ft) and the surface temp stays under 80°F
