How to Store, Acclimate & Prep for Your Modin LVP Installation

Modin's SPC core is stable enough that formal acclimation isn't required, but proper storage, climate, and a flat subfloor still matter for a clean install.

  • Climate: 65°F–85°F before, during, and after installation
  • Carton storage: Flat and horizontal at all times, never on end
  • Subfloor flatness: No more than 3/16" over 10 feet
  • Vapor barrier: 6 mil moisture barrier required over any concrete slab
  • Acclimation: 24–48 hours recommended, not required

Storage

Store cartons flat at all times, standing them on end stresses the precision click edges and can damage them before installation. Stacked flat, you can stack as high as you'd like. Keep storage indoors, ideally 40°F–90°F, and protect carton corners from impact.

Acclimation

Not required, Modin's SPC core doesn't expand or contract like natural wood. We still recommend 24–48 hours in the install room: the click mechanisms seat best at room temperature, especially after storage or transit in extreme heat or cold. Bring planks to 65°F–85°F before you start clicking.

Subfloor Flatness

No more than 3/16" over 10 feet, the single most important factor in a successful install. Any bumps, dips, and ridges should be fixed. Patch low spots, seams, cracks, and joints before starting.

Installing Over an Existing Floor

  • Resilient sheet vinyl (single layer): Yes, if flat, secured, and dry
  • Ceramic, porcelain, marble, terrazzo: Yes, grout joints filled flush
  • Wood or laminate (on slab): Remove first, can trap moisture
  • Wood or laminate (upper story / crawl space): Lower risk, use judgment
  • Cushioned or padded floors: No
  • Below-grade tile over concrete: No
  • Floor showing signs of warping, or moisture damage: No, remove and test subfloor first

Over a slab, removing existing wood or laminate is safer, rigid plank on top can trap moisture and warp the material underneath. Risk is lower over a second story or crawl space.

What to Avoid

  • Don't store boxes on end.
  • Don't install in an unconditioned room.
  • Don't skip the flatness check.
  • Don't install over a slab without a vapor barrier.
  • Don't cover a floor showing damage or warping.

How long does Modin need to acclimate?

Not required, but 24–48 hours in the install room is recommended for best performance.

Do I need a vapor barrier?

Yes, over concrete, required even though Modin is waterproof.

Can I install over existing tile or vinyl?
