What Is a Wear Layer and Why Does It Matter?
The wear layer spec predicts how long a vinyl floor will last better than any other. Here's how to read it and what to look for.
The wear layer is the protective layer on your floors. Every footstep, chair slide, and paw lands on the wear layer. Once it wears through, the print film is exposed and the floor needs replacement. In LVP floors, wear layer thickness is the single best predictor of how long a vinyl floor will last.
Mil vs. Millimeter
Wear layers are measured two ways. A mil is one-thousandth of an inch. A millimeter (mm) is roughly 40 mil. Use this chart as reference and be sure to convert to a single unit when comparing products reflecting either one.

A floor's Commercial Warranty is a good indicator of the expected lifespan of a floor based on heavy use. A thinner wear layer costs less upfront, but replacing a worn floor means paying for material, labor, trim, and disruption again.

Common Questions
Does a thicker plank mean a thicker wear layer?
Total thickness includes the core and underlayment. Compare the wear layer spec directly, it's listed separately on any reputable spec sheet.
Can a worn wear layer be repaired?

Do Silvan and Arista have wear layers?

What do I need for pets or heavy traffic?
