What Is Modin LVP Made Of?

A 60–70% limestone SPC core, aluminum oxide finish, and pre-attached IXPE underlayment, the same construction across every Modin collection, with multiple wear layer and plank size options.

Modern vinyl flooring splits into two families: flexible LVT (PVC with plasticizers, the older format) and rigid LVP, often marketed as SPC, rigid core, or WPC, which adds limestone for dimensional stability and resists temperature swings far better. Modin's SPC core is a balanced 60–70% limestone, 30–40% PVC: stable enough to resist heat expansion, flexible enough to resist cracking.

What Modin Is Made Of

Every collection shares the same core, finish, and underlayment. What changes is plank size and wear layer thickness:

  • Signature: 40 mil (1.0 mm) wear layer, 4.5 mm SPC core, 1.5 mm IXPE underlayment, 7 mm total thickness, 9" × 72" planks
  • Base: 20 mil (0.5 mm) wear layer, 3.5 mm SPC core, 1.0 mm IXPE underlayment, 5 mm total thickness, 6" × 48" planks
  • Craftsman: 40 mil (1.0 mm) wear layer, 4.5 mm SPC core, 1.5 mm IXPE underlayment, 7 mm total thickness, 3.4" × 72" planks
  • Herringbone: 40 mil (1.0 mm) wear layer, 4.5 mm SPC core, 1.5 mm IXPE underlayment, 7 mm total thickness, 4.2" × 23.3" planks

The Five Layers

  1. Protective finish. Aluminum oxide, harder than the urethane most LVP uses. Sets the sheen.
  2. Wear layer. Clear virgin PVC protecting the print film. The most critical spec for lifespan.
  3. Print film. The printed wood grain or pattern. Delicate on its own, why the wear layer matters.
  4. SPC core. The structural body, giving rigidity and dimensional stability.
  5. Attached underlayment. IXPE foam, 100% waterproof and stronger on noise reduction than cork.

Why These Choices Matter

  • Aluminum oxide finish passes 25,000 cycles of castor chair testing with no visible damage.
  • 40 mil wear layer (Signature, Craftsman, Herringbone) is top-tier residential, rated for light commercial use. Base's 20 mil is solid residential-grade at a lower price point.
  • 60–70% limestone stays stable across 0°F–140°F without becoming brittle.
  • IXPE underlayment doesn't absorb water like cork does, keeps the waterproof rating intact and delivers IIC 64 with a suspended ceiling.
  • Virgin PVC stays clearer than recycled, keeping the print sharp and avoiding the cloudy haze of lower-grade floors.

Common Questions

Is Modin SPC or WPC?
The Modin Collection is SPC. The core is limestone and PVC with no wood fiber, denser and more stable than WPC.

Is Modin waterproof?
Yes, 100%, top to bottom. Neither the SPC core nor the IXPE underlayment absorbs water.

What's the difference between Signature and Base?
Same core and finish. Signature is thicker overall (7 mm vs. 5 mm) with a thicker wear layer, thicker underlayment, and larger planks.

Are there phthalates or heavy metals in Modin?
The Modin Collection passes phthalate testing (CPSC-CH-C1001-09.3) and heavy metal migration testing (EN 71-3). They are FloorScore and CARB certified for indoor air quality.
