Modin LVP vs. Arista Laminate: What's the Difference?

Both are floating floors with aluminum oxide finishes and premium wear surfaces. The core material is where they diverge, and it determines waterproofing, feel underfoot, and which spaces each performs best in.

Modin is built on a limestone-and-PVC composite core. Arista on a dense wood-fiber (HDF) core. That single difference determines everything else. If you need a waterproof floor for a bathroom, laundry room, or basement, Modin is the right call. Arista is water-resistant, not waterproof.

The Core Difference

Modin's limestone-PVC core doesn't absorb water, 100% waterproof top to bottom, stable from 0°F to 140°F. Arista's HDF core is denser than budget laminate and handles spills wiped up promptly, but extended standing water or wet-area installation can compromise it. If moisture exposure is a concern, Modin will be the most waterproof choice.

Wear Surface

Both use aluminum oxide finishes and sit at the top of their categories, just measured differently.

  • Modin Signature, Craftsman, and Herringbone feature a 40 mil virgin PVC wear layer (top-tier residential, commercial rated). Base features a 20 mil virgin PVC wear layer.

  • Arista is AC5, two grades above the AC3 at most big-box retailers, passing castor chair testing with no visible changes.

Feel Underfoot

Arista at 14 mm with an HDF core will feel closer to real hardwood. Modin's IXPE underlayment softens the feel, but with a 7 mm plank and SPC core it will feel more firm underfoot than Arista.

Common Questions

Is LVP the same as laminate?

LVP has a PVC wear layer and a PVC and limestone core, making it 100% waterproof. Laminate has melamine pressed print film wear layer and a waxed HDF wood-fiber core, making it highly water-resistant but not waterproof.

Which is more scratch-resistant?

Arista in most cases. AC5 is two grades above standard residential laminate and its HDF core is denser underfoot. Modin's 40 mil wear layer is top-tier for vinyl, but Arista's surface hardness is higher.

Which is better for pets?

Modin's waterproof core means accidents don't reach the subfloor. Arista handles scratches well but isn't built for standing liquid exposure.

Can I mix them across rooms?

You'd need a transition strip, Modin runs 5–7 mm depending on the model. Arista runs 14 mm thick.

Can both go over radiant heat?
