How to Repair Damage on Modin LVP Floors

Modin is built tough, but accidents happen. Most damage can be repaired at home without replacing the plank. Here’s how to match the right fix to the damage.

  • Light surface scratches: Buff with microfiber cloth or back of a spoon
  • Visible scratches, nicks, gouges: Color-matched LVP repair putty
  • Deep gouges, chips, broken plank: Replace the plank

When in doubt, start with the least invasive option.

Light Scratches: Buff Out

Rub the scratch firmly with a microfiber cloth in the direction of the plank grain. The back of a spoon, smooth and rounded, can work the scratch out without adding new abrasion. A slightly damp cloth helps lift residue. If still visible, move to putty. 

Deeper Scratches: Repair Putty of Concelear

Use Roberts Palette Quick-Repair Putty or a similar color-matched repair product suited for use with LVP. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application.

Deep Damage: Replace the Plank

What you'll need: replacement plank from your original order, circular saw, sharp chisel, utility knife, rubber mallet, Gorilla Clear Glue or super glue.

 

Step 1: Remove the damaged plank

  1. Draw a centerline down the plank, then 45-degree lines from each corner to the centerline.
  2. Set saw blade depth to match plank thickness to protect the subfloor.
  3. Cut along the centerline, then the diagonal lines. Don't cut into adjacent planks.
  4. Remove the center section, then the two triangular end pieces.
  5. Chisel off the lock mechanism from the long and short edges of the surrounding planks. Vacuum thoroughly.

Step 2: Prepare the replacement plank

  1. Chisel off the lock mechanism from the long and short edges of the new plank.
  2. Cut the corners where the two grooved edges meet.
  3. Apply adhesive to the exposed grooves on both the replacement plank and surrounding planks.

Step 3: Install

  1. Align the cut corner first, sliding the exposed click mechanism under adjacent planks.
  2. Drop the plank into position and tap flush with a rubber mallet.
  3. Let adhesive fully cure before foot traffic or moving furniture.

Order Overage Upfront

We recommend you order at least 8% overage with your original purchase and store extras in a dry space between 0°F and 140°F.

Prevention

Felt pads (1" minimum) on all furniture legs. Masonite panels when moving heavy furniture or appliances. Wide-wheel casters or a chair mat under rolling chairs. Keep floors clean, grit is the leading cause of surface scratches. See How to Clean Modin LVP Floors.

 

Common Questions

Can I sand out a scratch?

Modin is vinyl, not hardwood, sanding damages the wear layer and makes the problem worse.

Do I need a professional?

Most homeowners can do it with basic tools. If you're not comfortable with a circular saw inside an installed floor, a local installer can handle it quickly.

Is scratch damage covered under warranty?
